I’m up before the morning
Before the daylight breaks
Got work already waiting
Got choices I gotta make
I’ve never been the perfect man
I won’t pretend I am
But when it comes to my little girl
I’ll do everything I can
I get a few hours in the evening
And weekends when they come
So I try to make each minute count
Before I bring her home
She runs to me and calls me Daddy
And the whole world disappears
I’d give anything to protect her
From every hurt and every fear
I’m her dad
And I’m not going anywhere
I want the mornings and the bedtimes
I want more than borrowed hours here
I want to watch her growing up
Not hear about the things I missed
I know her mother loves her too
But I love that little girl like this
There’s been anger in the middle
There’ve been words I can’t take back
Times I thought I knew the whole truth
Before I knew all of the facts
Fear can make a man react
When he thinks his child’s at risk
And maybe I’ve gone too far sometimes
Trying to make sense of it
I don’t see myself as the villain
I see a father standing guard
But good intentions don’t erase
The times I’ve made things hard
And she shouldn’t carry grown-up battles
Or hear the things we say
She deserves two parents who can love her
Without pulling her both ways
I’m her dad
And I’m not going anywhere
I want the mornings and the bedtimes
I want more than borrowed hours here
I want the daycare runs and sick days
The ordinary life we miss
I know her mother loves her too
But I love that little girl like this
Maybe equal doesn’t mean a scoreboard
Maybe love ain’t measured out in days
Maybe being a good father
Means learning when to change
I can fight for time without fighting her mom
I can question without making war
Because someday my little girl will understand
What all this fighting was for
And when she’s old enough to ask me
What I did when things got tough
I hope I can say I learned that protecting her
Also meant growing up
I’m her dad
That will never disappear
Through every court date every argument
Every complicated year
I want a place inside her childhood
That is steady safe and true
Not because I won against her mother
But because we both chose you
So when I bring you home tonight
And you wrap your arms around me
I’ll say goodnight my little girl
Daddy loves you endlessly
And whatever happens tomorrow
Whatever somebody decides
There’ll always be a place for you
Right here by Daddy’s side.
