He Waited at the Door
Verse 1
I spent years running hard down a dead-end road,
Chasing empty promises, carrying a heavy load.
I learned to wear a thousand masks so nobody would know,
The fear behind the smile, the pain I’d never show.
I played the strong man in the daylight,
The broken man at night.
Everybody saw the laughter,
Nobody saw the fight.
The bottle was my refuge, rebellion was my creed,
Looking for salvation in things I’d never need.
But every wrong decision, every slammed and locked-up door,
There was mercy in the shadows standing watch once more.
Pre-Chorus
I couldn’t see His footprints,
But He was walking every mile.
I couldn’t hear Him calling,
But He never left my side.
Chorus
He waited at the door, never forcing His way in,
A gentleman of grace while I was drowning in my sin.
Through addiction and the heartbreak, through every reckless choice,
He never stopped pursuing me though I ignored His voice.
Behind the masks I used to wear,
Behind the lies I told,
He saw the man I really was
And loved me through it all.
He knew every hair upon my head before the day was born,
And He waited at the door.
Verse 2
There was one lonely, scary night when everybody left,
The silence felt like prison and my soul was out of breath.
Forgotten by the world, with tears upon my face,
I learned that even there I couldn’t outrun grace.
The darkness kept on whispering that nobody would care,
But somewhere through the brokenness I felt Him standing there.
Not condemning, not accusing, not settling old scores,
Just waiting with His mercy outside my shattered doors.
I had spent a lifetime acting,
Playing roles for every crowd.
But when all the lights went dark that night,
There was nowhere left to hide.
Pre-Chorus
I couldn’t see His purpose,
In all the pain I’d made.
But looking back I see Him now,
Protecting me each day.
Bridge
He counted every tear that fell.
He heard every desperate prayer.
When I thought I was abandoned,
He was already there.
I ran from Him a thousand times,
Still His love remained the same.
The Shepherd never stopped searching
For the one who lost his way.
He saw beneath the masks,
Beneath the pride and shame.
The world knew my disguises,
But He still knew my name.
Final Chorus
He waited at the door, and when I called He entered in,
Washed away the guilt and shame and all I’d carried then.
Now my scars have become stories,
And my chains have become songs,
Proof that God was never absent,
Proof His love was there all along.
He knows every hair upon my head,
Every battle, every scar,
And the God I tried to run from
Was never very far.
Outro
I thought I was forgotten,
I thought I was alone.
But the God who knew my name
Never left me on my own.
He waited at the door…
Through every mask…
Through every lie…
Through every mile I ran.
And thank God one day,
I let Him in.
