I'm Still Alive

When I was a boy I’d lie awake at night

Staring through the dark, asking what was right

Why am I here, what was I made to do?

I dreamed of noble callings, all grand and true

But I did not fear, I would just smile and say

There’s time enough to find it some other day

I’m still alive, the road ain’t run its line

The breath in me still whispers there is purpose yet to find

Through wasted years or faithful tears, grace has kept me walking on

I’m still alive… so my reason can’t be gone

Then I grew older and the world was sweet

Laughter in the taverns, dancing in the street

Lived for the moment, mostly lived for me

Called it freedom, never saw vanity

But somewhere deep a voice I knew would chime—

You’re still alive, and you still have time

I’m still alive, the road ain’t run its line

The breath in me still whispers there is purpose yet to find

Through wasted years or faithful tears, grace has kept me walking on

I’m still alive… so my reason can’t be gone

Then I remembered You, Lord, after years away

I said if You still want me, show me how to stay

Maybe coming near You was the reason all along

To lose myself in something greater than my own song

And in Your hands my restless heart arrived

And I knew why I was still alive

I’m still alive… so my reason can’t be gone

You gave me children, gave me love to tend

Made service holy, made the small things mend

And if that was purpose, it was more than I deserved

But I still feel another calling stirring in Your Word

Now the children’re leaving, and my work is winding down

The old familiar questions come drifting back around

What reason keeps me breathing if my first labors are through?

Lord, if You still have work, I’ll walk wherever You lead me to

For every dawn repeats what I survive—

There must be a reason I’m still alive

I’m still alive, and that itself may be a sign

That mercy keeps unfolding purpose in its time

Not finished yet, not done just yet, though evening may have come

I’m still alive… Lord, let Your will be done

I know there is a reason I am here

As long as breath remains, Your call is near
