Bloodlines & Backroads
Verse 1
Daddy left before I knew his face,
Just a name and an empty place.
Mama raised two boys alone,
Held the line when hope was gone.
Hell moved in with a wedding ring,
Closed fists, broken everything.
We learned young to stay real quiet,
Prayed to God but didn’t riot.
Verse 2
She ran fast like a midnight train,
Found a Ranger with a weathered name.
Jim wore scars like second skin,
Army ghosts and a crooked grin.
Northbound roads, then south again,
Thought maybe life would finally bend.
One black night on a county road,
Crossed headlights — the world went cold.
Steel and glass, a ringing phone,
Sheriff said, “Son… she’s gone.”
One breath here, the next withdrawn,
Tire marks where my mama’s gone.
Chorus
I’ve been carried by wind, broke by falls,
Buried more love than I could hold.
Every mile took part of my soul,
Still breathing, so I ain’t done.
If pain’s a tongue, I speak it well,
If grace is real, I’m learning slow.
I come from bloodlines and backroads,
And a God who won’t let go.
Verse 3
Jim dropped us at my grandparents’ door,
Said nothing — I never saw him no more.
Grandma lost her fight with time,
Cancer took what wasn’t mine.
Granddad tried, but it got too hard,
So I found home in cattle yards.
Hunting, horses, dirt and drive,
Learned how to stay alive.
Verse 4
Drake left quick on an ATV,
One laugh short of a memory.
Worked my hands till they split raw,
Built my life from dirt and law.
Brother lost his fight at twenty-three,
Pills hit harder than grief hit me.
Verse 5
After the funeral, a number passed,
A name buried deep in my past.
My hand shook hard when I hit call,
Didn’t know if he’d answer at all.
He said, “Son, I never left you,”
Turns out love still breaks through.
Verse 6
So I signed my name on government ink,
Boots and rucks, tried not to think.
While I was gone, death came fast,
Lost my grandparents just like that.
Bridge
Said I knew Jesus since I was young,
Knew the words, never lived them.
At twenty-three I hit my knees,
No deals left — just honesty.
Found a cross where my pride fell dead,
Found my life in the blood He bled.
Final Chorus
I’ve been carried by wind, broke by falls,
Buried more love than I could hold.
Every mile took part of my soul,
He stayed when everyone was gone.
I don’t wear faith like a badge or chain,
I wear it like healed-over pain.
I come from bloodlines and backroads,
And a God who called me home.
Outro
Now I wake beside my wife and breathe,
Life tastes new when you finally see.
Still got scars, still got doubt,
But I know what resurrection’s about.
