She stumbled in,
Somehow shook my ground.
Didn’t wanna change my world,
But everything turned around.
I’d been livin’ with half a heart,
Just gettin’ through each day—
’Til she caught my eye that night
And the truth got in my way.
A few years later, drivin’ down the road,
Wind in her hair, that California gold.
I was leavin’ again when she turned to me and said:
“If you can see a future without me,
And that don’t break your heart…
That’s how you know
You’re playin’ the right part.”
But those words cut clean through me,
Couldn’t shake ’em if I tried—
’Cause I wasn’t where I needed to be,
No… I needed to be by her side.
I was a mess, a man in between,
Wrappin’ my head around what I had
And where I wanted to be.
Told her one night in the midst of it all:
“All I know is I want you around… forever.
And a horse.
And my son.”
She answered simply,
“We can have all that.”
I know we can… I know we will.
Everything changed when she said—
“If you can see a future without me,
And that don’t break your heart…
That’s how you know
You’re playin’ the right part.”
But those words cut clean through me,
Couldn’t shake ’em if I tried—
’Cause I wasn’t where I needed to be,
No… I needed to be by her side.
All the years of just holdin’ on
To a life without much left…
I knew I had to change my course,
’Cause love was callin’ me back.
“If you can see a future without me,
And that don’t break your heart…
That’s how you know
You’re playin’ the right part.”
“All I know is I want you around… forever.
And a horse.
And my son.”
She answered simply,
“We can have all that.”
