Drove away

We had no expectations, no grand plan that day,

Then you answered that front door with not a stitch in the way.

I bought you a Red Bull, grabbed a coffee for me,

Thought, hell, she’s a great chick, easy company.

You had me laughing harder than I had in a while,

There was something in your madness, something in your smile,

Then brunch down at the Cabin, talking time away,

Neither one of us knowing what had started that day.

’Cause I nearly drove away,

Nearly put that old ute into gear,

Nearly told myself, don’t be stupid, mate,

There’s nothing happening here.

But my heart was beating harder

Than it had any right to that day,

Funny how your whole life can change

When you nearly drive away.

I walked you back home when the morning was through,

Standing in your kitchen, suddenly it was me and you.

I looked into your eyes and forgot what I should say,

Wanted just to hold your hand, but couldn’t find the way.

So I pulled you in a little, tried to play it cool,

Caught the smell of your hair and felt just like a fool.

Then another cuddle goodbye, and I headed for the door,

But something in me knew I wanted something more.

And I nearly drove away,

Nearly put that old ute into gear,

But my hands stayed on the steering wheel,

And my heart just wouldn’t behave,

No roses, no candlelight,

No perfect movie scene,

Just Red Bull, coffee, breakfast,

And a moment in between.

No promise of forever,

Hell, we barely knew what to call it then,

Just me sitting in that driveway

Wondering if I should knock again.

Yeah, I nearly drove away,

Nearly left that feeling there,

Nearly missed the start of something

I never knew I’d dare.

Now I think about that kitchen,

Your eyes, your smile, your hair,

And thank God something held me

In that old ute sitting there.
