Prompt / Lyrics
The American Chain is Breaking In the land of plenty, we stand divided, Some links shine bright, but many are misguided. Jefferson warned, "Enormous inequality Brings misery, threatens our liberty." The American chain is breaking, hear the sound, The weight of the weak pulling the strong down. If every link was strong, we’d stand tall and free, Together in strength, a true unity. Madison warned how wealth’s uneven hand Could doom freedom’s hope across our land. Adams said the snowball grows with time, We must share the wealth, keep the chain in line. Jefferson said, an equal share’s a dream, But misery grows in that unequal stream. Legislators must find a way To keep the balance, prevent decay. “To take from one for others,” Jefferson said, “Violates the labor that earned their bread.” Yet fairness calls for opportunity, So all may build, in true community. The American chain is breaking, hear the sound, The weight of the weak pulling the strong down. If every link was strong, we’d stand tall and free, Together in strength, a true unity. Our founders dreamed this republic grand, Built on the strength of a broad free land. Not ruled by few, but all as one, United until the work is done. The chain can heal with hands joined tight, Each link shining bright with equal right. Property and chance for all to claim, The promise kept in freedom’s name. The fruits of labor must be secure, Yet none left weak, left insecure. A nation thrives when all partake, Each link strong for freedom’s sake. Madison saw the "factions" rise, a danger to the state, Where property’s uneven hand fuels the fires of hate. A "representative" shield was built to guard the common good, So no single "link" could break the law, or act as if they could. Franklin said that "virtue" is the gold we must preserve, Lest "excessive wealth" becomes a god we start to serve. He feared a "moneyed interest" might lead the land astray, And trade our "essential liberty" for safety of the day. Washington hoped for "happiness" in the lowest class of men, Through "equal distribution" that could make us whole again. They sought a "Citizen’s Share" where every worker had a stake, With an "ownership" in freedom that no tyrant’s hand could take. If "snowballs grow as they roll," as Adams warned of old, Then we must guard the "plenty" from the few who seek the gold. The "General Welfare" is the goal, the purpose of the law, To mend the American chain and fix every single flaw. The American chain is breaking, hear the sound, The weight of the weak pulling the strong down. If every link was strong, we’d stand tall and free, Together in strength, a true unity. The American chain is breaking, don’t delay, The time is now to heal the fray. Together whole, the nation stands, Strong as one, with joined hands.
