War I never win

I took the long way back to nowhere

Watched my shadow stretch and bend

People say I look much older

Guess it happens in the end

I tried to call the version of me

That lived beneath the neon sky

But the line was lost in static

And the voice said, “Who am I?”

If I never really started

Can I ever really end?

I keep walking through the silence

Like I’m chasing down pretend

And I tell them I’ve been changing

But I’m folding from within

There’s a peace in the becoming

And a war I never win

All the faces blur like water

When the past begins to fade

I’m a flicker in the mirror

In a town I never made

And I don’t know if it matters

If I’m someone or a sound

Just a hum beneath the static

As the stars are coming down

If I never really started

Can I ever really end?

I keep dancing with the silence

Like I’m holding my old friend
