The Girl Who Stole My Shadow

Verse 1]

I woke up at midnight to a knock on my door,

Three little taps like I’d heard them before.

The hallway was empty, the moon hanging low,

But something was waiting where the cold winds blow.

I looked in the mirror and something was wrong,

My reflection was smiling while I sang the song.

She whispered, “You finally came back to me,”

Then stepped through the glass like it wasn’t a thing.

She wore my face,

She knew my name,

But when she spoke,

She called me “stranger.”

There’s a girl in the dark who stole my shadow,

Running through the streets where the streetlights glow.

She knows every secret I’ve tried to bury,

Every little promise I forgot to carry.

And she’s screaming my name from the edge of town—

“Come and find me before the sun goes down.”

If you see her first, whatever you do…

Don’t let her tell you she’s me.

I followed her footprints through rain on the street,

Barely a sound from her ghostly bare feet.

She left little roses, all black as the night,

Like breadcrumbs for something that shouldn’t have life.

At the end of the road stood an old carnival,

No music, no people, just lights on the wall.

The ferris wheel turned though nobody came,

And every painted clown whispered my name.

She took my hand,

Her fingers froze,

And said, “You left me here

A thousand years ago.”

There’s a girl in the dark who stole my shadow,

Laughing at the stars while the dead trees grow.

She knows every fear I’ve tried to hide,

Every door I’ve locked from the inside.

And she’s screaming my name from the top of the wheel—

“Tell me, little girl, what do you think is real?”

I looked into her eyes and suddenly knew…

She wasn’t following me.

I was following her.

The carnival lights went out one by one,

The moon disappeared.

There was nowhere to run.

She pulled off her face—

And underneath was mine.

Same eyes.

Same scars.

Same crooked smile.

She said,

“You call me your shadow because you’re scared to admit…

I’m every version of you that you abandoned.”

So I reached for her hand.

She reached for mine.

Outside of time.

And when the morning finally came,

There was only one girl on the road.

But she had two shadows.

Now there’s a girl in the dark who walks beside me,

She doesn’t disappear when the daylight finds me.

She knows all the secrets, she carries the pain,

She whispers, “You’re allowed to change.”

So if you see us dancing underneath the moon,

Don’t ask which one is me too soon.

Maybe I’m the shadow.

Maybe she’s the soul.

Maybe we’re both just pieces

Of a story growing whole.

Three little taps at midnight.

A knock on the door.

This time…

I don’t answer.

Because my shadow

already knows the way in.
