Seventeen

I wake up with the sunlight

Falling through my room,

Got a thousand little questions

And a thousand things to do.

Everybody says, “You’ll find it,”

Like they know where I should go,

But I’m learning that the best things

Are the ones you come to know.

So I’ll take it day by day,

Let the future find its way,

I don’t need to have it figured out tonight.

I’m seventeen, caught somewhere in between,

The person that I was and who I’m gonna be.

I’ve got dreams bigger than the stars I see,

And a heart that’s still learning what it means to be free.

If I fall, I’ll get back up again,

If I lose my way, I’ll start where I began.

I may not know where this road is leading me,

But right now, right here—

I’m seventeen.

I’ve got friends who feel like family,

And memories I’ll keep,

Late-night conversations

And promises we mean.

There are days I feel invincible,

Days I’m scared to try,

But maybe growing up is

Learning how to wonder why.
