I woke in the pine rain

With dust on my sleeves

Old master said, “Boy,

You were born to leave”

Bare feet on stone steps

Scar on my knuckle

I learned how to bend

Then I learned how to buckle

I breathe in the mountain

I count to ten

I turn that hunger

Into iron again

My shadow is shaking

But I’m still here

One broken body
