and then as a man.
He teaches astrology and geometry.
He knows the virtues of herbs and stones.
He moves the bodies of the dead
from place to place.
He lights candles on graves.
He moves the dead.

He decides where the body rests
and what light falls on it
and what that light illuminates
or conceals.
He has only six legions.
He does not need more.
The dead cannot fight back.
The curriculum cannot defend itself.
The monument stands where it is placed.
Six legions is more than enough
to manage what the dead mean.

The Confederate monument was not built
in the years after the Civil War.
It was built in 1915.
It was built in 1963.
It was built when Black Americans
were attempting to vote
and the monument was the answer
to the attempt.
The monument was a message.
Bifrons placed the candle
where it cast the right shadow.
Florida's Stop WOKE Act.
Texas's curriculum standards.
The removal of AP African American Studies.
The replacement of history
with the version
that does not require
the ones in power
to account for how they arrived.
The graves at the Tulsa Race Massacre site
were found in 2020.
The massacre was in 1921.
Ninety-nine years.
Bifrons moved the bodies
and blew out the candle
and no one looked
for ninety-nine years.
The 1619 Project was published.
Eighteen states moved to ban it from classrooms.
Not to refute it.
To ban it.
The distinction is Bifrons:
you do not argue with the dead,
you move them.
Both parties have used the dead.
Both parties have lit candles
where the light served them
and moved the bodies
when the location became inconvenient.
I see you, monster who becomes a man.
I see the candle.
I see where you placed it
and where you did not.
I see the graves that had no light
for ninety-nine years.
I see what was buried there
and what was meant to stay buried.

I teach astrology.
The stars tell where things are.
I teach geometry.
Geometry defines the shape of the space.
I know the virtues of herbs and stones.
Stones can be monuments.
