The Last Time I Died

There was a red moon hangin’ crooked like a warning in the sky, The walls of the farm house were peeling like they’d watched too many die. The floorboards groaned beneath me like they knew what I’d became,

Just a ghost in worn out denim with a pocket full of shame.

My heartbeat staggered sideways like a drunk man in the rain, Every thump a little weaker, every breath a little pain. The silence felt alive, like it was crawlin’ up my spine, And the shadows whispered secrets sayin’, “Boy, you’re almost mine.”

I felt the cold creep through me like a winter made of steel, And the room got tight and narrow till I couldn’t even feel. There was thunder in my temples, like the sky was crackin’ wide, And I swear I heard the devil say, “Take your place inside.”

But I rose up from the floorboards with a fire that wasn’t gone. My knees were weak and shaking, but my soul began to roar, And the shadows backed away because they’d seen this fight before. I said, “You almost had me, but you ain’t takin’ me tonight,” And the room shook like the heavens when the angels drew swords & started to fight.
