I’m that little canary that once sang in your yard
Right outside your window, I sang all day long
Then they put me in a cage and made me a prisoner
They took me to the city, traded me for money
In the basement of that building was where I lived
They insulted me to make me sing, but in sadness I stayed silent
Living like a captive, I often used to imagine
If I broke open that cage, I’d return to my homeland
One late afternoon, the boss’s daughter came
She saw my sadness and her heart was moved
She opened the cage door and freed me from prison
“Go away, little canary, go sing in your homeland”
Today I’m back here again, since the early dawn
Announcing dusk and the breaking of the day
Flying over the forest and bringing joy to my beloved
So happy to be back in my old home
