WHY IS THERE A FOOT STICKING OUT OF THAT
(That’s Not How This Is Supposed to Work)
VERSE 1
She said, “You should watch this, it’s beautiful.”
I said, “Absolutely. Life is a miracle.”
I had coffee. I had questions. I was ready to grow.
Then somebody said, “Breech,” and the room got real slow.
Why is there a foot sticking out of that?
Why is everybody acting normal about that?
There are six trained adults and nobody looks scared—
THERE IS A FOOT WHERE A FOOT HAS NEVER BELONGED TO BE THERE.
CHORUS
That’s not how this is supposed to work.
That’s not how anything is supposed to work.
I’ve seen diagrams.
I took health class.
The diagram did not prepare me for that.
Everybody keeps saying, “Breathe, breathe, breathe,”
I am.
She’s doing something else entirely.
Why is there a foot sticking out of that?
(That’s not how this is supposed to work.)
VERSE 2
Then the camera moved closer, which felt unnecessary.
I now have new definitions for the word “temporary.”
Someone said, “A little tearing is completely routine.”
That sentence had too many casual words in between.
Then a whole human came out and they handed it over
like someone had just pulled a wet cat from a lawn mower.
Everybody started crying. “Congratulations! He’s here!”
I clasped my hands, shut my mouth
and stared at the wall for a year.
CHORUS
That’s not how this is supposed to work.
That’s not how anything is supposed to work.
I’ve seen diagrams.
I took health class.
The diagram was apparently propaganda.
Everybody keeps saying, “It’s natural, it’s natural.”
So are sinkholes.
So are parasites.
So is being eaten alive by a bear.
Why is there a foot sticking out of that?
(That’s not how this is supposed to work.)
