Thin blue line

Sun comes up, I’m putting on the uniform,

Badge on my chest, ready for another storm.

Coffee in the cup, radio by my side,

Ain’t looking for trouble, just protecting lives.

Some folks see the badge, they only see the blue,

But they don’t see the things we’re willing to do.

When everybody runs, we’re the ones who stay,

Standing in the darkness till the break of day.

Mama said, “Son, be careful out there,”

I said, “I will, I promise, I swear.”

But you never know what’s waiting down the road,

When you wear that badge, you carry a heavy load.

I’m walking that thin blue line,

Between the wrong and the right.

Putting my life on the line,

Every day and every night.

I may not come home with a story to tell,

But I’ll stand between you and the gates of hell.

It ain’t about glory, it ain’t about fame,

It’s about serving with honor and protecting that name.

I’ve held a child while their mama cried,

Knocked on doors with a family terrified.

Pulled somebody over just trying to get home,

Then answered a call where somebody was alone.

You learn real quick that tomorrow ain’t promised,

Every call could be the one that changes all of it.

So I pray before I leave and when the shift is done,

Thank God for the strength to keep doing what I’ve begun.

There’s a picture on my wall of the reason why,

A family that trusts me to make it home tonight.

So I buckle that belt and I start that ride,

With faith in my heart and my brothers by my side.

Lights go out, another shift is through,
