I woke up this morning, heavy heart and weary soul, Singing “Oh, wretched man that I am,” Just trying to make it through, I’ve been sitting in these pews, Listening to a gospel that don’t set me free, They say, “Just struggle on, brother, That’s all you’ll ever be.”
Lowered the standard, traded glory for defeat, Said, “Victory’s for heaven, But here you just repeat All your failures, all your shame, Sin’s got you in its chains, And you’re content to stay broken, Never rising from the pain.”
Oh, wretched man religion, You taught me how to lose, To settle for the darkness And call these shackles good news. But my soul is longing, For a fire that’s burning bright— For the life my Savior promised, For the power and the light.
I read about the early saints, Hearts ablaze with holy love, They weren’t content with sorrow, They lived and reigned above Sin and flesh and devil’s schemes, Triumphant in the fight, But we’ve traded their devotion For a gospel void of might.
Catherine cried, “Don’t you see? Satan’s sold you a lie— You’re making infidels of thinkers Who see you never try To claim the victory Jesus won, To live the life He gave, To rise up from your ashes And believe He came to save.”
So I’m done with wretched living, With a faith that’s bound and cold, I’m reaching for the promise, For the story yet untold. I’ll consecrate my heart, Give my all and not look back, I’ll believe in full salvation, And walk the victory track.
Oh, wretched man religion, You taught me how to lose, But I’m done with all your sorrow, I’m done with all your blues. Now my soul is rising, With a fire that’s burning bright— I’m living what my Savior promised, I’m walking in the light.
No more sitting in the shadows, No more chains upon my soul, I’m done with wretched man religion— Aggressive faith is now my goal. I’ll reign and I’ll be living, I’ll triumph and I’ll sing, For Jesus is my victory, My Savior, Lord, and King.
Oh, wretched man religion, You taught me how to lose, But I’m done with all your sorrow, I’m done with all your blues. Now my soul is rising, With a fire that’s burning bright— I’m living what my Savior promised, I’m walking in the light.
I’m walking in the light!
